With its undying fan base and constantly accelerating storylines (not to mention the awesomely gruesome bloodshed), The Walking Dead could stay on AMC until the actual zombie apocalypse strikes. With that in mind, it's hard to imagine the finale of such an incredible series, but all good things must come to an end.
Luckily, creator and comic book writer Robert Kirkman has a plan, and he pictures an impressive 10-12 more seasons before we truly need to face the final death.
So, what can we expect from the series finale?
overwhelming the remaining human population. In a departure from that conventional narrative, Kirkman admitted to Marc Maron on his WTF podcast that his ideal ending will stay away from the kind of devastating apocalypse we've come to expect.
The goal… I hope The Walking Dead goes on long enough that at the end, everyone is like, ‘Good thing we took care of those zombies!'That's right! Humanity comes out on top and sweeps up the last of those pesky walkers.
This might surprise some, but Kirkman goes on to talk about how, despite the constant death, fear, and pain, The Walking Dead is really about overcoming the impossible:
People talk about how The Walking Dead is bleak, and if you take a certain cross-section of the story, then yeah. Horrible. People have their loved ones eaten and they have a horrible time. But I see the story from beginning to end, over many many years about humanity overcoming this insurmountable apocalyptic situation.In that sense, it totally makes sense that our favorite characters (or at least some of them) will prove triumphant (please make it, Daryl Dixon!). If facing the show's own mortality is too much to bear, keep in mind that the spin-off series Fear the Walking Dead is just kicking off on August 23rd!
